Course Description
This non-credit, self-paced certificate course provides English language instruction for students with a beginning level of English (CEFR A1). This course will take about 20 hours to complete (roughly 2 hours per module). You can repeat any modules as often as desired. Once you have finished the material in this course, you will receive a certificate of completion.
Learning Objectives
This course will assist beginner English language learners in improving their English. The learning materials in the course are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR) level A1.
- can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
- can introduce oneself and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where one lives, people one knows, and things one has.
- can interact with other people in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Pre-Requisite
Before students begin the course, they need to have a basic understanding of the English alphabet and basic sentence structure. A student who is just beginning to learn English, or who has no prior knowledge of English, is at a pre-A1 level and should not take this course.
Materials Needed
Students will need a computer with microphone, speaker, and internet access.
Instructor Bio
Nell Rose Hill, PhD has taught ESL in higher education since 2005. Dr. Hill received a Ph.D. in English, specializing in composition and TESOL, from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2019. Her hobbies include reading, cycling, and traveling.
